Dissertation Formatting: Double-Spaced, Numbered Chapters, Two Page-Number Streams
Upload the Word file. It comes back double-spaced with the front matter in order, chapters numbered and on new pages, roman then arabic page numbers and a binding margin — with the graduate school’s checklist.
A dissertation goes to a format reviewer before it goes to the library, and the reviewer works from a checklist: title page, abstract, table of contents with correct page numbers, chapters that start on new pages, page numbers roman in the front matter and arabic from chapter 1, consistent double spacing, a binding margin. Veermat reads the dissertation you wrote in Word and sets all of it — the title page on its own unnumbered page, the abstract on its own page, a contents page generated before chapter 1 with page numbers taken from a real render, chapters numbered 1, 1.1, 1.1.1 and each on a new page, the two page-number streams, Times New Roman 12 double-spaced with a 3.5 cm binding margin — and reports the reviewer’s checklist. Your wording never changes. Checking is free; the editable .docx downloads with Pro or as a one-time purchase.

How it works
How to format a dissertation in four steps
The fastest way to format a dissertation without manual copy-paste, screenshots, or formatting cleanup.
- Step 1
Upload your Word document
Drop in the messy .docx you want cleaned up. Your file is processed only to format it and is never used to train models.
- Step 2
AI reads the structure
The AI detects headings, body text, lists, and tables, and finds inconsistent styling, without changing any of your wording.
- Step 3
Formatting is fixed
Heading styles, alignment, spacing, fonts, lists, indentation, and margins are made consistent across the whole document.
- Step 4
Download the clean .docx
Get a still-editable Word file that opens in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, and LibreOffice: clean formatting, your words unchanged.
In short
To format a dissertation in Word, upload the .docx to Veermat: it puts the title page and abstract on their own pages, generates a contents page with page numbers, numbers the chapters and starts each on a new page, numbers the front matter i, ii, iii and the text from 1, and sets Times New Roman 12, double spacing and a binding margin. You get the graduate school’s format checklist; nothing in your text is rewritten.
What is the correct format for a dissertation?
Title page, abstract, acknowledgements, table of contents, lists of tables and figures, chapters, references, appendices — in that order. Front matter numbered i, ii, iii with the title page unnumbered; the text numbered 1, 2, 3 from chapter 1. Chapters numbered and each on a new page; 12-point type, double-spaced, 1-inch margins with a wider left margin for binding. Upload your dissertation and Veermat applies all of it and reports the checklist.
Before the format review
The graduate school’s checklist, run before they run it
Format reviews take a week and come back with a list. The report Veermat returns is that list: title page, abstract, contents, lists, chapters, page numbering, references, appendices — each pass or what to fix. Fix the two it names, re-run, submit once.
- Double-spaced Times New Roman 12 with a binding margin
- Front matter roman, text arabic from chapter 1, title page unnumbered
- Chapters numbered and on new pages; contents page with real numbers
- Missing abstract, references or lists flagged before submission
Features
Why people choose Veermat to format a dissertation
Front matter in order, on its own pages
The title block gets its own unnumbered page, the abstract its own page, and the contents page is generated before chapter 1 — listing the abstract, acknowledgements, every chapter and section, the references and appendices.
Roman then arabic page numbers
The document is split into two numbering streams the way a format guide asks: i, ii, iii through the front matter and 1, 2, 3 from the first page of chapter 1, as real page fields in the footer.
Chapters numbered and on new pages
Every chapter title styled Heading 1 becomes 1, 2, 3 with sections 1.1 and 1.1.1, each chapter, the references and each appendix starting on a new page. Your own numbering, if you have one, is kept.
The format reviewer’s checklist
Title page, abstract, acknowledgements, contents, list of tables and figures, chapters, page numbering, references, appendices — each reported as pass or what to fix, with the formatted document beside it.
Use cases
Where it helps most
Submission week
The dissertation is written; the format guide is twelve pages. Upload, read the checklist, fix what it names, download.
After the format review
The graduate school sent it back for page numbering and chapter breaks. One run sets both and shows the reviewer's checklist so the second submission passes.
Chapters written as separate files
Merged chapters arrive with three heading styles and no numbering. One run gives the whole document one scheme, one contents page and one look.
Supervisor's draft
Send a draft that already looks like a thesis — numbered chapters, contents, page numbers — so comments are about the argument.
Why not just copy-paste?
Veermat vs. doing it manually
Fixing formatting by hand takes ages and rarely comes out consistent. Here's the difference.
Output quality
What the cleaned document looks like
Every run produces a clean, still-editable .docx, never a rewrite. Here's what you get.
- Times New Roman 12, 1.5 or double spacing, 1-inch margins with a 3.5 cm binding margin
- Title page unnumbered; i, ii, iii through the front matter; 1, 2, 3 from chapter 1
- Chapters numbered 1 / 1.1 / 1.1.1, each on a new page; contents page with real page numbers
- An itemised format-review checklist, and your wording untouched

Frequently asked questions
Can it follow my university’s template exactly?+
It applies the structure every guide shares. Where your guide differs — spacing, margins, a heading style — say so on the result and it re-runs; the rest of the checklist still applies.
My university wants double spacing / a different margin.+
Tell the formatter on the result — “double-spaced, 4 cm left margin” — and it re-runs with that. The dissertation page is double-spaced by default.
My chapter titles are bold text, not heading styles.+
Chapter numbering, page breaks and the contents page work from Word’s Heading 1/2/3 styles, so the checklist will ask you to apply them: select each chapter title, choose Heading 1, and re-run.
Does the contents page update in Word?+
Yes. Entries are real links to the chapters with page-reference fields; the numbers you see were filled from a render of the finished document, and Word refreshes them with Update Field after edits.
Does it change my citations or my reference list?+
No. Run the APA or MLA page if you want the reference list formatted to a style guide; this page sets the thesis structure and leaves every word as written.
