Thesis Format in Word: The Section Breaks, Page Numbers and Contents Page, Done for You

The parts of Word that break a thesis — section breaks, unlinked footers, two page-number formats, a TOC field — set for you. Upload the file and see the result.

Formatting a thesis in Word means learning the three features that break most often: section breaks (to restart page numbers at chapter 1), unlinked headers and footers (so the front matter and the text can carry different numbers), and the table of contents field (which is only right if every heading has the right style). Veermat does those three for you on the Word file you already have: it inserts the section break before chapter 1, sets roman page numbers before it and arabic from it with the title page unnumbered, generates a contents page whose numbers come from a real render, numbers the chapters and starts each on a new page, and sets the typography and binding margin. It reports the checklist and leaves every word as written. Free to check; the editable .docx downloads with Pro or as a one-time purchase.

How it works

How to format a thesis in Word in four steps

The fastest way to format a thesis in Word without manual copy-paste, screenshots, or formatting cleanup.

  1. Step 1

    Upload your Word document

Drop in the messy .docx you want cleaned up. Your file is processed only to format it and is never used to train models.

  2. Step 2

    AI reads the structure

The AI detects headings, body text, lists, and tables, and finds inconsistent styling, without changing any of your wording.

  3. Step 3

    Formatting is fixed

Heading styles, alignment, spacing, fonts, lists, indentation, and margins are made consistent across the whole document.

  4. Step 4

    Download the clean .docx

Get a still-editable Word file that opens in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, and LibreOffice: clean formatting, your words unchanged.

In short

The Word features a thesis needs — a section break before chapter 1, unlinked footers, roman then arabic page numbers, a contents page from heading styles — are what Veermat sets when you upload the .docx. Chapters are numbered and start on new pages, the title page stays unnumbered, and the report shows the format checklist. Nothing in your text is rewritten.

How do I make page numbers start at 1 on chapter 1 in Word?

Insert a section break (Next Page) before the chapter, unlink the new section’s footer from the previous one, then Format Page Numbers: lower-case roman starting at i for the front matter and arabic starting at 1 for the text, with Different First Page on the title page. Veermat does exactly that automatically when you upload the thesis, and generates the contents page too.

Section breaks, unlinked footers, TOC field

The three Word features a thesis depends on, set correctly in one pass

Every thesis guide’s FAQ is the same three questions: how to restart page numbers, how to stop the title page showing one, how to make the table of contents right. The answers are a section break, an unlinked footer with two number formats, and heading styles feeding a TOC. Veermat applies all three and shows you the result before you download.

  • Section break before chapter 1, footers unlinked
  • Roman numerals before it, arabic from it, title page unnumbered
  • Contents page generated from your heading styles with real page numbers
  • Chapters numbered and each on a new page

Features

Why people choose Veermat to format a thesis in Word

Front matter in order, on its own pages

The title block gets its own unnumbered page, the abstract its own page, and the contents page is generated before chapter 1 — listing the abstract, acknowledgements, every chapter and section, the references and appendices.

Roman then arabic page numbers

The document is split into two numbering streams the way a format guide asks: i, ii, iii through the front matter and 1, 2, 3 from the first page of chapter 1, as real page fields in the footer.

Chapters numbered and on new pages

Every chapter title styled Heading 1 becomes 1, 2, 3 with sections 1.1 and 1.1.1, each chapter, the references and each appendix starting on a new page. Your own numbering, if you have one, is kept.

The format reviewer’s checklist

Title page, abstract, acknowledgements, contents, list of tables and figures, chapters, page numbering, references, appendices — each reported as pass or what to fix, with the formatted document beside it.

Use cases

Where it helps most

Submission week

The thesis is written; the format guide is twelve pages. Upload, read the checklist, fix what it names, download.

After the format review

The graduate school sent it back for page numbering and chapter breaks. One run sets both and shows the reviewer's checklist so the second submission passes.

Chapters written as separate files

Merged chapters arrive with three heading styles and no numbering. One run gives the whole document one scheme, one contents page and one look.

Supervisor's draft

Send a draft that already looks like a thesis — numbered chapters, contents, page numbers — so comments are about the argument.

Frequently asked questions

Will the section break confuse my later edits?+

No more than one you inserted yourself: it is a standard Next Page section break before chapter 1, visible in Word’s formatting marks, and the footers are ordinary unlinked footers with page fields.

My university wants double spacing / a different margin.+

Tell the formatter on the result — “double-spaced, 4 cm left margin” — and it re-runs with that. The dissertation page is double-spaced by default.

My chapter titles are bold text, not heading styles.+

Chapter numbering, page breaks and the contents page work from Word’s Heading 1/2/3 styles, so the checklist will ask you to apply them: select each chapter title, choose Heading 1, and re-run.

Does the contents page update in Word?+

Yes. Entries are real links to the chapters with page-reference fields; the numbers you see were filled from a render of the finished document, and Word refreshes them with Update Field after edits.

Does it change my citations or my reference list?+

No. Run the APA or MLA page if you want the reference list formatted to a style guide; this page sets the thesis structure and leaves every word as written.
