Free MLA Heading Generator for Word

Type the four lines and the title and download the first page of an MLA 9 paper as a Word file, with the running head set. Already wrote the paper? Upload it and the heading block, header and Works Cited are formatted in place.

An MLA 9 paper has no title page. It opens with a four-line heading block at the top left (your name, the instructor, the course, the date written day month year), then the title centred on the next line, then the text, all double-spaced in one font. Every page carries your surname and the page number at the top right. The generator builds that first page as a Word file, header included; the formatter below applies the same layout to a paper you already wrote and checks the Works Cited page.

How it works

How to make an MLA 9 heading in Word in four steps

The fastest way to make an MLA 9 heading in Word without manual copy-paste, screenshots, or formatting cleanup.

  1. Step 1

Type the four lines and the title

Your name, the instructor, the course and the date as day month year; then the title. The preview shows page 1 as you type.

  2. Step 2

    Download the Word file

The heading block flush left, the title centred, your surname and the page number in the header, double-spaced 12-point Times New Roman, and a Works Cited page.

  3. Step 3

    Add your paper

A highlighted line marks where the text starts; paste or type there. The spacing and the first-line indent carry over.

  4. Step 4

Or upload the paper you already wrote

The formatter below sets the heading lines, adds the surname-and-page header, and formats the Works Cited in the same run.

In short

An MLA 9 heading is four double-spaced lines at the top left of page 1: your name, your instructor's name, the course, and the date as day month year. The title goes on the next line, centred, in plain type. A header with your surname and the page number sits at the top right of every page. Veermat generates that first page as a .docx or formats the heading in the paper you upload.

What goes in an MLA heading?

Four lines, flush left, double-spaced, in this order: your full name; your instructor's name (Professor Booth or Dr. Booth); the course number and name; and the date, written day month year with no commas, for example 7 October 2026. The title follows on the next line, centred, with no bold, underline or quotation marks. The header, separate from the heading, is your surname and the page number at the top right of every page.

Heading and header are two different things

The block on page 1, and the running head on every page

Students lose MLA marks on the part they cannot see while typing: the header. The heading block is four lines on page 1; the header is your surname and the page number, half an inch from the top of every page, set in Word's header area. The generator sets both. The formatter builds the header from the name on your heading block.

  • Name, instructor, course, date: flush left, double-spaced, no extra space
  • Title centred on the next line, plain type, title case
  • Surname and page number top right on every page, in the header
  • 12-point Times New Roman, 1-inch margins, ½-inch first-line indents
  • A Works Cited page with hanging indents, ready for your entries

Frequently asked questions

Is the MLA heading generator free?+

Yes. Type the lines, download the Word file, no signup. Uploading a whole paper to format it is free to preview; Pro downloads the editable result.

Does MLA have a title page?+

Not normally. MLA 9 uses the four-line heading block instead of a title page. Some instructors ask for one; if yours does, add it as a separate page before the heading, or use the APA title page generator and adjust the lines.

What is the MLA block header?+

Usually people mean the heading block: the four flush-left lines on page 1. The header proper is the running head, your surname and the page number at the top right of every page, which lives in Word's header area, not in the text.

How do I add the surname and page number in Word?+

Insert → Page Number → Top of Page → Plain Number 3, then click just before the number and type your surname and a space. The generator does this for you; the formatter adds it to an uploaded paper that has none.

Does it change my words?+

No. Only the formatting changes: margins, font, spacing, title page, headings, page numbers and the reference list. Your sentences and your citations stay as you wrote them; the report tells you what to change by hand.
