APA Citation Checker: Do Your Citations Match Your References?

Upload the Word paper and every (Author, year) citation is matched to the References page, and every entry to the text. What doesn't match is listed by name, so you fix the right line before your marker finds it.

The most common APA deduction is not a margin: it is a source cited in the text with no reference entry, or an entry nobody cites. Veermat reads every in-text citation in your paper — parenthetical and narrative, organisations, “n.d.”, “et al.”, two years at once — and matches each one to the References page, then checks the list the other way. The result names each mismatch, flags author lists that should be “et al.”, lists journal articles without a DOI, and formats the whole paper to APA 7 in the same run.

How it works

How to check your APA citations against your reference list in four steps

The fastest way to check your APA citations against your reference list without manual copy-paste, screenshots, or formatting cleanup.

  1. Step 1

    Upload your Word document

Drop in the messy .docx you want cleaned up. Your file is processed only to format it and is never used to train models.

  2. Step 2

    AI reads the structure

The AI detects headings, body text, lists, and tables, and finds inconsistent styling, without changing any of your wording.

  3. Step 3

    Formatting is fixed

Heading styles, alignment, spacing, fonts, lists, indentation, and margins are made consistent across the whole document.

  4. Step 4

    Download the clean .docx

Get a still-editable Word file that opens in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, and LibreOffice: clean formatting, your words unchanged.

In short

Veermat checks APA 7 citations both ways: every in-text citation against the reference list, and every reference entry against the text. It names each citation with no entry and each entry never cited, flags author lists that should use “et al.”, lists articles missing a DOI, and formats the paper in APA 7. It does not invent or rewrite citations.

How do I check that my in-text citations match my references?

Upload the Word file. Veermat reads each (Author, year) and Author (year) citation, including organisations, “n.d.” and “et al.”, and matches it to an entry by first author and year. It then lists citations with no entry and entries that are never cited, so you can add the missing entry or delete the unused one.

Both directions

Every citation has an entry, every entry has a citation

Markers check the match first because it is the quickest error to find. The checker does it the same way: by first author and year, so “(Lin et al., 2025)” is matched to the paper Lin leads, not to one where Lin is a co-author, and an organisation cited without its comma still finds its entry.

  • Citations with no reference entry, named
  • Reference entries never cited, named
  • Author lists that should be “et al.” in APA 7
  • Journal articles without a DOI listed; one found on CrossRef added with a click
  • The whole paper formatted to APA 7 in the same run

Features

Why people choose Veermat to check your APA citations against your reference list

Parenthetical and narrative

“(Smith, 2020)” and “Smith (2020)”, “Smith et al.’s (2021) review”, two years in one citation.

Organisations and n.d.

“(U.S. Census Bureau, n.d.)” and “(World Health Organization, 2023)” are read as citations.

Nothing invented

The checker names the mismatch; you decide the fix. It never writes a citation or an entry for you.

Report plus formatting

The same upload gets margins, spacing, title page, headings and hanging indents in APA 7.

Frequently asked questions

Does it fix my citations?+

It lists them; it does not rewrite them. A missing entry needs the source's details, which only you have. For entries, the reference generator rebuilds one from a DOI or title, and a DOI found on CrossRef can be added with one click.

Why is a source I cited listed as never cited?+

Usually the year or the spelling differs between the citation and the entry (2021 in the text, 2014 in the list), or the citation names a different first author. The report shows both so you can see which one to correct.

Does it check MLA or Harvard too?+

Yes: MLA (Author page) and web-page citations against Works Cited on the MLA checker, and author–date Harvard on the Harvard checker.

Does it change my words?+

No. Only the formatting changes. Your sentences, data and citations stay exactly as you wrote them; anything that needs your judgement is listed in the report instead of being changed.

Is it free?+

Yes. Upload the Word file (or paste a Google Docs link), see the formatted result and the itemized report free, no signup. Pro downloads the editable .docx.
