Does the APA checker verify my in-text citations against the reference list?

Yes. When you run a paper in APA 7 (or Chicago) mode, Veermat reads every in-text citation, parenthetical or narrative, and matches it by surname and year to an entry in your reference list, then checks the other direction too. The compliance report lists citations that have no entry and entries that are never cited, so you can add the source or remove the entry. It flags; it never invents a reference.

Markers check two things about citations that a formatter alone cannot fix: whether every source you cite appears in the reference list, and whether every entry in the list is actually cited. Veermat does both. Parenthetical citations such as (Levine & Murnen, 2009), narrative ones such as Vohs et al. (2005), and organisation authors such as (Center on PBIS, 2026) are all recognised, including multiple sources separated by semicolons.

The report also points out author lists that should use “et al.” under APA 7 (three or more authors from the first citation), journal articles in the reference list that have no DOI or URL, and whether the list is in alphabetical order. When every entry is recognisable, the list is sorted for you; entries are moved whole and never rewritten.
