Fix Heading Levels in Word from Your Numbering

A long report numbered 1, 1.1, 1.1.1 often has headings formatted three different ways. Upload it and each heading is styled by its level, with one look per level, so the structure your numbers describe is the structure the reader sees.

Reports, theses and manuals number their sections so readers can find their way, but the formatting rarely keeps up: “2. Results” bold and large, “2.1 Sales” underlined, “3. Recommendations” plain. Veermat reads the numbering, works out each heading's level from it, and gives every heading of a level the same format, while keeping your numbers and your words. Numbered headings typed at the start of a paragraph are moved onto their own line.

How it works

How to make a Word document's headings consistent by level in four steps

The fastest way to make a Word document's headings consistent by level without manual copy-paste, screenshots, or formatting cleanup.

  1. Step 1

    Upload your Word document

Drop in the messy .docx you want cleaned up. Your file is processed only to format it and is never used to train models.

  2. Step 2

    AI reads the structure

The AI detects headings, body text, lists, and tables, and finds inconsistent styling, without changing any of your wording.

  3. Step 3

    Formatting is fixed

Heading styles, alignment, spacing, fonts, lists, indentation, and margins are made consistent across the whole document.

  4. Step 4

    Download the clean .docx

Get a still-editable Word file that opens in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, and LibreOffice: clean formatting, your words unchanged.

In short

Veermat reads section numbers (1, 1.1, 1.1.1) to find each heading's level and formats every heading of a level the same way, keeping your numbers and wording. On request (Pro), it also applies Word's Heading 1–3 styles from the numbers, so the navigation pane and an automatic table of contents follow the structure.

How do I make heading levels consistent in Word?

Upload the document: headings are recognised from their numbers and formatting, and each level gets one format. To also set Word's built-in Heading styles from the numbers — needed for the navigation pane and an automatic table of contents — ask “fix heading levels from the numbers” on the result (Pro).

Your numbers are the structure

1 → level 1, 1.1 → level 2, 1.1.1 → level 3

The numbering already encodes the outline. Veermat trusts it: a plain “3. Recommendations” is a top-level heading because the document has “2.1” and “2.2” under its siblings, and “2.1 Sales” is the level below.

  • Levels worked out from section numbers
  • One format per level across the document
  • Your numbers and wording kept as typed
  • Numbered headings typed into a paragraph moved to their own line
  • Word Heading styles from the numbers on request

Frequently asked questions

Will it renumber my sections?+

No. Numbers are kept exactly as typed; they are used to work out the levels. If a number is wrong (two sections called 2.3), correct it in the text.

Does it build a table of contents?+

A contents page you already have is kept and formatted. For Word to generate one automatically, the headings need Word's Heading styles: ask for them on the result (Pro), then insert the table from Word's References tab.

Does it change my words?+

No. Only the formatting changes. Your sentences, data and citations stay exactly as you wrote them; anything that needs your judgement is listed in the report instead of being changed.

Is it free?+

Yes. Upload the Word file (or paste a Google Docs link), see the formatted result and the itemized report free, no signup. Pro downloads the editable .docx.
