APA Heading Levels, Applied Automatically

Upload the paper and each heading is styled at its APA 7 level — centred bold, flush-left bold, bold italic — and kept in order. Numbered headings take their level from the number: 2 is level 1, 2.1 level 2, 2.1.1 level 3.

APA 7 has five heading formats and most papers use two or three: level 1 centred and bold, level 2 flush left and bold, level 3 flush left in bold italic, each in title case. Students lose marks for skipping a level, for using one format for two levels, and for bolding a line that isn't a heading. Veermat recognises your headings — by their Word styles, how you formatted them, or their numbers — styles each one at its APA level, and lists the result in the report.

In short

Veermat applies APA 7 heading formats by level: level 1 centred bold title case, level 2 flush-left bold, level 3 flush-left bold italic. Headings are recognised from Word styles, formatting or numbering — a paper numbered 2, 2.1, 2.1.1 gets levels 1, 2 and 3 from its numbers. The paper's title is not a heading; it is repeated in bold above the introduction.

What are the APA 7 heading levels?

Level 1: centred, bold, title case. Level 2: flush left, bold, title case. Level 3: flush left, bold italic, title case. Level 4: indented, bold, ending with a period, text continuing on the same line. Level 5: indented, bold italic, ending with a period, text continuing. Use them in order, without skipping a level.

Levels from your numbers

2 → level 1, 2.1 → level 2, 2.1.1 → level 3

When a paper numbers its sections, the numbers already say which heading belongs under which. Veermat uses them: a plain “3. Method” becomes level 1 because the paper has “3.1” under it, and “3.1 Participants” becomes level 2 — even when the student formatted them differently.

  • Level 1 centred bold, level 2 flush-left bold, level 3 bold italic
  • Numbered headings levelled by their numbers
  • A numbered heading typed into its paragraph moved to its own line
  • Bold labels inside text are not made headings
  • Title repeated in bold above the introduction

Frequently asked questions

Does it number my headings?+

No. APA 7 student papers don't number headings, and Veermat never adds or changes numbers. If your paper is numbered, the numbers are used to work out the levels and are left as you typed them.

Will the headings show in Word's navigation pane?+

Headings already in Word's Heading styles do. To have Word's Heading 1–3 styles applied to all of them from their numbers, ask for it in plain words on the result (a Pro feature).

Does it change my words?+

No. Only the formatting changes. Your sentences, data and citations stay exactly as you wrote them; anything that needs your judgement is listed in the report instead of being changed.

Is it free?+

Yes. Upload the Word file (or paste a Google Docs link), see the formatted result and the itemized report free, no signup. Pro downloads the editable .docx.
