MLA 9 Formatting for Literature and Literary Analysis Papers
Upload the literary analyses, close readings and comparative essays you already wrote. It comes back in MLA 9th edition with a rubric report your professor would recognise.
Literature classes grade MLA formatting as strictly as the writing: the four-line heading block, the running head of surname and page number, a plain centred title, double spacing with no extra paragraph space, and a Works Cited page with hanging indents in alphabetical order. Veermat reads the Word document you already wrote for your literature course and rebuilds its layout to MLA 9 — Times New Roman 12, 1-inch margins, ½-inch indents, Works Cited on a new page — then hands you an itemised compliance report: what passes, and the few things only you can decide, such as a citation with no matching entry. Your wording never changes. Checking is free; the editable .docx downloads with Pro.

In short
To format a literature paper in MLA 9, upload the Word file to Veermat: it applies Times New Roman 12, double spacing, 1-inch margins and ½-inch indents, keeps your name, instructor, course and date as the heading block, builds the surname-and-page running head, centres the title plain, puts Works Cited on a new page with hanging indents in alphabetical order, and cross-checks every in-text citation against the list. You get an itemised MLA 9 report; nothing in your text is rewritten.
How do I format a literary analysis in MLA 9?
The same MLA 9 layout as any essay — heading block, running head, plain centred title, Times New Roman 12 double-spaced, ½-inch indents — with two things literature rubrics watch: block quotations of more than four lines indented ½ inch with no quotation marks, and page or line numbers in every citation, (Morrison 42) or (Hamlet 3.1.56). Upload the paper and Veermat sets the layout and reports the citation checks.
For close readings and comparative essays
Quotations and citations are where literature papers lose marks
A literary analysis is mostly quotation and citation, and the rubric knows it: block quotations indented without quotation marks, every parenthetical citation carrying a page or line number, every cited work on the Works Cited page with the title in italics. Veermat keeps your block quotations indented, cross-checks every author-page citation against the list, and reports what is missing.
- Block quotations keep their ½-inch indent
- Every (Author page) citation matched to a Works Cited entry
- Works Cited entries with the work’s title in italics kept as you wrote them
- Title centred and plain, with the work’s title italicised inside it if you italicised it
Features
Why people choose Veermat to format a literature paper in MLA 9
Heading block and running head
Your name, instructor, course and date stay as four lines at the top left; your surname and the page number go in the top-right header of every page as a real page field; the title is centred and set plain.
Works Cited done the way it is marked
Works Cited moves to its own page under a centred plain heading, every entry gets a hanging indent and double spacing, wrapped entries are rejoined, and the list is sorted alphabetically.
Citations cross-checked
Every author-page citation is matched to a Works Cited entry and every entry to a citation. Missing sources, uncited entries and three-author citations that should read “et al.” are flagged for you to decide.
Literature papers, not generic text
Block quotations keep their indent, section headings keep their order, and your content, tables and figures are preserved exactly.

Frequently asked questions
I cite one novel throughout. Does the report complain about page-only citations?+
No. Citations that carry only a page number after the author has been named in the sentence are normal MLA practice and are not counted as missing.
Does it italicise the novel’s title for me?+
It keeps the italics you applied. Titles of whole works should be italicised and titles of poems or stories put in quotation marks; the formatter never removes emphasis you added inside a title or a citation.
Can it handle a comparative essay with two Works Cited entries per author?+
Yes. Entries are sorted alphabetically and kept as separate entries; the cross-check matches citations by surname.
