APA format
APA format is the citation and document-formatting style of the American Psychological Association, used mainly in the social sciences. It sets specific rules for margins, font, line spacing, headings, in-text citations, and a References page.
APA format (currently the 7th edition) is the style guide most college and university programs in psychology, education, nursing, and the social sciences require for papers. In a Microsoft Word document it dictates concrete formatting choices: 1-inch margins on all sides, double line spacing throughout, an accepted font (such as 12 pt Times New Roman, 11 pt Calibri, or 11 pt Arial), a 0.5-inch first-line indent on each paragraph, and a running page number in the top-right header. It defines five levels of headings with distinct bold and italic styling, in-text citations in author-date form like (Smith, 2020), and a hanging-indented References list on its own page. Because so many of these requirements are visual and structural, students most often lose marks on the formatting layer rather than the writing: inconsistent spacing, the wrong font, missing indents, or headings that were manually bolded instead of using real Word heading styles.
